as far back as the era of ancient egypt and the prehistory period of the areas along the two major rivers, lapis lazuli became the first commodity of the silk road, and then the silk road murals made of these western gems physically detailed the continuous cultural exchanges across the millennia, and it is the mineral pigments that enable the murals containing human artistic civilization to shine for more than a thousand years.
murals on the silk road · a thousand years of glories presents numerous murals spanning all latitudes of time and across the western regions. never before has such a diversity and richness of murals been shown from ancient times to the present, running from the central plains to the western regions, also across from the wei and jin dynasties to the song and yuan dynasties. this is a comprehensive exhibition of silk road murals and an exploration of the fusion of ancient civilization and modern technology.
since 2020, various artists have joined this new silk road project led by tais cheonbuldong art museum, applying contemporary art and new perspectives to pass on the ancient art of the silk road and have it revitalized.
of course, it is impossible to bring out the authentic paintings from the thousand buddha cave. however, these murals, reproduced with the integration of traditional techniques and high-tech restoration via gemstone pigments, show the splendid look of the murals painted almost a thousand years ago. the murals, scattered abroad and destroyed by war, can now be recreated to be displayed again.
four 'first' of this project
the first to realize a physical commercial exhibition of gemstone murals, unveiling the mystery of gemstone mineral pigments.
the first to recreate the murals as they were when they were originally painted, enabling the audience to travel back thousands of years to experience the brilliant colors in ancient times.

illusory land of great void is the space set up by the artists with photoelectric equipment, based on the images and brilliant colors in various murals.
at the innermost part of the exhibition hall, a restored canal of the thousand buddha cave comes into view. more than a hundred years ago, these masterpieces among the silk road murals were stolen and strayed to 14 countries, shocking the world then. now, through restoration, they were brought back to the world, awaiting exploration.
this is the only originally restored painting in the exhibition hall, the rest are scanned prints of the restored painting.
